84/2101 [Artists' manuals]. Bloemaert, A. Artis apellae, liber hic, studiosa inventus (...). Amst., N. Visscher, n.d. (1679), 1st ed., 160 engr. plates (incl. the chiaroscuro woodcut title-page) by F. BLOEMAERT after A. BLOEMAERT, contemp. calf w. richly gilt spine, folio.

- Occas. sl. age-toned/ yellowed and/ or sl. foxed. Otherwise fine.

= The rare first edition of Abraham Bloemaert's influential Tekenboek, rarely found complete. It was preceded by a variant also titled Artis Apellae, which was privately issued by Bloemaert's sons between 1650 and 1656, but with a smaller number of prints (between 100-120 prints). Only three copies of that work are known (all in musea). Bolten p.253: "The leading example of the master model in the Netherlands is the drawing book by Abraham Bloemaert. (...) Bloemaert's drawing examples are not derived from those of other authors. They represent the fruits of a life of industrious study in academies and after nature (...)." SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE LXV.
