- The second illuminated textleaf is dam. w. loss of part of the lower line of text. Fingersoiled in lower outer corner; partly (vaguely) waterstained in margin (mostly in blank margins only).
= Written on paper w. recurring watermark of 3 crescents. This watermark was in use in the Ottoman empire from ±1630 until the 19th century and was produced by Italian papermakers who sold their paper to the various countries in the Ottoman empire. The illuminated leaves are partly a trifle smaller in size than the manuscript leaves and the verso of these leaves are blank, which shows that the illumination was done in a separate process and then bound with the manuscript in the proper place. Provenance: ticket on frontwr. of goatskin wrapper stating in pencil: "Koran afkomstig uit Atjeh - missigit [= mosque, prayer-house] en Gsanglimer[?] Polim [?] ontvangen in 1896." (Qur'an from Aceh - missigit [= prayer-house] and Gsanglimer[?] Polim[?] received in 1896). This information probably indicates a provenance from a missionary post in Aceh. SEE ILLUSTRATIONS PLATE LXI.
