= Highly impressive album dealing with the (re)construction of Moscow. Karasik/ Heiting, The Soviet Photobook p.252; Lemmens/ Stommels, Russian Book Art 73; Parr/ Badger I, p.168f: "(...) one of the grandest of the Soviet photobooks designed by Alexander Rodchenko and Varvara Stepanova (...). The book begins conventionally enough, with the portraits of Lenin and Stalin, but it is not too long before the graphic pyrotechnics begin. A four-page fold-out panoramic photograph of a new hotel in Manezhnaya Square is followed a few pages later by the first of the 'keyhole' effects, of which Rodchenko and Stepanova seemed extremely fond. And so begins a whole raft of graphic effects, each piled upon the other". The work also contains extensive use of isotype statistical imagery, designed at the Moscow Izostat agency, founded with assistance of Otto Neurath and Gerd Arntz. The frontcover contains an embossed image of the (never constructed) Palace of the Soviets. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE XVII.
