76/4762 [Brazil]. "Praefecturae de Paraiba, et Rio Grande." Handcol. engr. map w. cartouche and large vignettes, on 2 attached sheets, 41,5x53,5 cm., Amst., J. Blaeu, 1662.

- Small tear in centre; sl. frayed. Nevertheless a fine copy.

= Impressive map of a small part of the coastline of Brazil and of the Manguaba river, after Cornelis Goliath and Georg Markgraf, who surveyed the lands occupied by the Dutch between 1630 and 1654. Three sea battles fought in 1640 are shown below, and the upper part of the map shows Tupi leaving their village, carrying a (Dutch) flag and led by a (Dutch) man. This map was first published in Caspar Barlaeus' Rerum per octennium in Brasilia of 1647, and could also function as the lower right sheet of a 9-sheet wall map, Brasilia qua parte paret Belgis; the places where the sheets overlapped are marked by faint lines at the left. Van der Krogt/ Koeman II, 9850/4:2D. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE LXV.
