= According to an autobiography in illustrations and drawings, Willem Stil began his career just after World War II, during which he was a forced labourer in Germany, at a publicity agency and later also worked as illustrator for Toonder Studios and as freelancer for various publications/ firms (i.a. Pan Am Airlines and De Haagsche Post). In the fifties he was employed by the Koninklijke/ Shell-Laboratorium, Amsterdam, from which he retired in 1981. The present archive shows his versatility in various styles (the illustrated autobiography contains one leaf with a humorous Tom Poes story about himself drawn in the style of Toonder), and his enormous output.
