Dutch translation of Kunst, das menschliche Leben zu verlängern, first published in 1797 and from the 3rd edition (1805) under the title Makrobiotik. The first Dutch translation appeared in 1799, followed by a second edition in 1802-1803 and a title-edition in 1837 under the title "Makrobiotik". "Hufeland's "Makrobiotik", [was] one of the most popular books of its time on personal hygiene. It was translated into all European languages. Hufeland was court physician at Weimar." Comprising i.a. an early plea against smoking: "Het tabak-rooken bederft de tanden, droogt het lichaam uit, maakt mager en bleek, verzwakt de oogen en het geheugen (...) en kan den geenen, die van teringagtig gestel zijn, bloedhoesten en longtering op den hals haalen" (part II, p.272).
