66/6008 [Dioramas]. Anonymous (19th cent.) (Diorama of a Carib camp). Made of paper maché and carved wood against a painted background, 19th cent., orig. wooden frame measuring 27x43x12 cm.

= Diorama's were a popular commodity in the 19th century to showcase the indigenous life in the colonies. This diorama presents an everyday scene in a Carib settlement along a river, the return of a hunt and the preparation of food. It is made in the style of Gerrit Schouten (1779-1839), who is known for his botanical drawings and diorama's depicting similar scenes. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE CXXXV.
