In his atlas he has introduced for the first time a correct choropleth map of the Netherlands. The contents of the original Historical Atlas of 1865 is on a very high cartographical level. Mees, Eekhoff and Staring are considered the only three intelligent Dutch cartographers of the mid-nineteenth century." (Koeman VI, p.207-208).

= The map, "Ducatus Geldriae et Comitatus Zutphaniae nova tabula" (Amst., Covens and Mortier, ±1725) and w. added strip of paper at the top w. letterpress "Kaart van het voormalig Gelderland (...)", shows in colours the inundations of the Rijn, IJssel, Lek, Waal and Maas rivers occurred early 1799, one of the 'disaster years' of that period. Indicated with letters and numbers in pen and red ink are the various dyke breaches. Colours, letters and numbers are explained in the main text.
