"The simple, geometric stylisation of the illustrations originated in the artist's prints with social themes. The introductory drawing in the book features the motif of barbed wire forming a grid, a theme that appeared in a photograph by Bartuška at the time." (Anděl).

This is evident in a few designs by Bartuška such as the cover for the collection of poems Velikonoce [Easter] from 1923, which has a decorative motif that draws on Čapek's cover design for Charles Vildrac's book Michael Auclair".
