Seven more volumes were published by Van der Aa (the first vol. on the voyages of the Portguese; 2 vols. on the voyages of the Spaniards; 2 vols. on those of the English and 2 vols. on the voyages of other nations). Sold w.a.f.
- Lacks plate 10; (closed) tear in inner margin of map; partly yellowed/ dampstained in outer margin; occas. foxed/ fingersoiled and occas. stained. Covers and corners worn; spine-ends partly chipped.
= Tiele 659 (erroneously calls for 6 vols.); cf. Mendelssohn I, p.889; cf. Gay 3118. Cox I, p.389: " (...) interesting as an account of South Africa at a time when comparatively little was known regarding its natural history and the Dutch settlers". Henze III, p.228: "Seine Werke fesselte durch lebhafte, flüssige Diktion und mußten Gemüter mächtig ansprechen, in denen noch Rousseausche Ideen nachklangen. Kein Reise-schriftsteller über Süd-Afrika hat größere Beachtung in west. Ausland gefunden als er."
- Vol.1 (of 2) only. Badly waterstained at the beginning (only affecting the preliminary leaves). Binding in mediocre condition and covers loosening. The plates and maps all in fine condition. Sold w.a.f.

- A fine copy, with six attractively handcol. views.
- Pastedowns detached; lacks final free endpaper; first ±20 lvs. (sl.) spotted/ stained (1x w. loss of some words; 2x upper margin strengthened w. paper) and w. owner's entry/ old annots./ underlining. Vellum sl. wrinkled. Nevertheless a good copy.

French naturalist and artist Jacques-Gérard Milbert travelled to the United States in 1815 where he spent 8 years as a teacher, based in New York City. During these years he travelled extensively through the northeastern regions of America. Contains fine large views on the Hudson, in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, the Niagara Falls etc. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE LXIX.
