= The second German edition (first Dutch ed. Amst. 1665) of the famous description by Nieuhof of the first embassy undertaken by the VOC to the emperor of China and one of the very few non-Jesuit sources of the period. Cordier, Bibl. Sinica p. 2346. Walravens, China illustrata 63/64 (later German editions): "Nieuhofs Chinawerk ist bis heute eines der bedeutendsten und gesuchtesten. Allein die 150 Abbildungen und Karten, die das Buch zieren und die nach Zeichnungen des Autors aufgeführt wurden, haben beachtlichen Wert. Bis weit in das 18.Jahrhundert hinein wurden sie immer wieder nachgedruckt und nachgeschnitten und prägten weitgehend das Chinabild der Zeit". The double-p. plates are mainly panoramic city views. "Was aber seinem Buch den höchsten Wert verleiht ist die Fülle prachtvollster Kupfertafeln von Städten, Landschaften, Volkstypen" (Henze III, p.612).
- A (very) fine set, complete with all the plates listed in the binder's instruction in the final volume. All vols. w. later endpapers; map of Bali sl. yellowed in margins; 2 plates loosely inserted.
= Landwehr, VOC 467; Tiele 1121; Alt Japan Katalog 1570; Cordier, Japonica 426-428; Cordier, Indosinica 927-930; Cat. NHSM I, 502; Mendelssohn IV, p.594. One of the most extensive works and the main old source on the Dutch East Indies with many documents, partly lost by now. Also containing important descriptions of i.a. Cape of Good Hope, China, Japan and Ceylon and two early voyages to Australia with interesting maps. For the description of the history of Amboina, Valentyn used the unpublished and lost manuscript "Amboinsch Dierboek" by Rumphius. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE LXXI.

Top of spine strengthened w. paper but still sl. dam.; lower outer corner of frontcover bumped/ cracked.
= Rare atlas, possibly an early edition of Desnos' later published atlas with an almost identical title, which contains 66 maps. Apart from the title-p., the publisher's and cartographer's names have been erased from in the cartouche. Two of the maps carry the date "1765" in the cartouche. No copy found (except possibly a similar atlas sold in our rooms in 1997, mentioning P. Bourgoin as the cartographer). SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE LXXIII.

His circumnavigation of Australia and the surveying that he did over a period of 9 years resulted in very detailed charts of the (entire) coast of Australia, which were used for many years after they were first issued. = Interesting collection of a large number proclamations bound per year on various subjects, but mostly judiciary, economic, political and taxation issues. I.a. "intrekking van het verbod omtrent den uitvoer van kaas" (16 january 1801).
AND 13 similar separate proclamations in contemp. wr./ boards, 1802-1810.
- Upper left corner torn off, incl. a small piece of the title; sm. waterstain in upper margin; formerly folded.
= Satirical Orangist broadside in the shape of an auction announcement. In 1787 the Dutch patriots tried to take over the government from the Dutch stadtholder with a revolution. However, the revolution failed and many patriots fled to France, i.a. Gerrit Schuurman (who is mentioned in the title and who died in exile in France).
- Binding sl. rubbed. A fine set.
= "(...) in de Patriottentijd, toen de burgerij zich heel nadrukkelijk met binnenlandse politiek ging bezighouden. Deftige herensociëteiten werden plotseling getransformeerd tot politieke clubs. Het koffiehuis diende nu als aktiecentrum voor het opstellen van petities. Maar de moraliserende weekbladen hebben deze politieke emancipatie niet begeleid, laat staan gedirigeerd. Zij bleven als voorheen vertogen leveren over abstracte thema's als vrijheid en vaderlandsliefde. Concrete invulling van die idealen werd overgelaten aan diverse partijbladen die in de jaren tachtig ontstaan, zoals de patriottische Post van den Neder-Rhyn (1781-1787) van Pieter 't Hoen en zijn orangistische tegenhanger, De Ouderwetse Nederlandsche Patriot (1781-1782) van Rijklof Michaël van Goens."
