- Both covers w. dam. spots from acid-biting (sl. affecting gilt border and central ornament); spine-ends and 1 corner restored w. leather. Owner's entry and stamp on first free endpaper. Nevertheless a desirable copy in a rare and remarkable binding.
= Large paper copy. Storm van Leeuwen (IIA, p.448) mentions a copy of the same work with ident. binding (C 1245/ fig. 182) that "may have been a present given by the authorities of the island of Voorne, bound by order of the publisher, Pieter van Waesberge." - Small (worm?)hole at foot of spine, not affecting the contents of the book. Slipcase worn along extremities. Otherwise a very fine copy.

= Landwehr, VOC p.XXVII and XXIX (with illustration): "Few VOC stamped bindings bearing the initials of the less important chambers, such as Delft and Rotterdam, have come to light. (...) Actually the two chambers jointly commissioned notebooks and/ or almanacs on a yearly basis from the same silversmith. Elegantly bound in sealskin, they were provided with a silverplate of an East Indiaman surrounded by scrollwork on the front and backcovers (...)." A beautiful and well-preserved rare VOC shagreen binding with a stylus functioning as catch as well as pen. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE LXXIII.

= DSB I, p.203-204. J.H. Blumenbach (1752-1840) was the founder of scientific anthropology (i.a. based on comparative anatomy and geology). "Blumenbach was one of the earliest thinkers to recognize the "historicalness" of nature, and therefore occupies an important place in the history of evolution theory." (DSB).

= Poetry, accompanied by an extensive biography, of Petrus Scriverius (1576-1660), the writer of the Laure-Crans voor Laurens Coster van Haerlem, Eerste vinder vande Boeck-Druckery, the second part of Ampzing, Beschryvinge ende lof der stad Haerlem, with i.a. a reprint of the poetry concerning the Gutenberg/ Coster-question from that work. Not in Bigmore/ Wyman, McMurtrie, Ekama.

= This rare broadside w. allegorical image describes the life and deceptive qualities of Giuseppe Francesco Borri (1627-1695), a notorious Italian catholic pseudoprophet who, persecuted by the Inquisition, had fled Milan and ended up in Amsterdam. Below the image a satirical poem by the Dutch writer and chiliast JAN ZOET: "Hier heeft de Konst heur kracht aan Borrijs Beeld getoont,/ Die, door Inbeelding, zich, tot Kooning, had gekroont/ In Kristy rijck op aarde; als, eertijdts, Jan van Leiden,/ Tot Munster, heeft gedaen, om 't volck, uit dorre weiden,/ In 't Heilrijck klaaver veld, met zijne harders staf,/ Te dryven naar Godts wil; Maar zijn verwaantheid gaf/ Hem duizend rampen; des hy, uit het roemrijck Roomen,/ Aan d'Amstel, vluchten moest (...)". In the text columns a biography of Borri based on the pamphlet Sententie en Executie, gewezen en gedaen over sijne excellentie Francisco Joseph Borri (The Hague, 1662. Knuttel 8687).
