Eisen depicting the presentation of the map to emperor Joseph II. Sheet XXI presents a plan of Brussels: "Plan Topographique de la Ville de Bruxelles et de ses environs". The map was first produced in three coloured manuscript copies, each on 275 sheets, between 1771 and 1777 on the scale of 1:11.520. It was inspired by and based on the geometrical method used for the large Carte de France surveyed by C.F. Cassini thirty years earlier. The manuscript maps then led to the publication of an engraved reduction on the scale of 1:86.400 and named Carte Chorographique, or Carte Marchande since this edition was meant for sale.
