= Each of these striking designs is inspired by one of the 100 poems of the Hyakunin isshu ("One hundred people, one verse"), famously compiled by Fujiwara no Teika (1162-1241) when he stayed in Ogura (near Kyoto). The poems are annotated at the end of each volume by Sasaki Nobutsuna, a poet and scholar of Nara- and Heian-period literature, whose work was supposedly the inspiration for Iida Shikô to create these designs. - Worn; some lacquer chipped off along the sides; w. some white powder/ mould(?) on the inside and in the crevices.

= Shimoyo no kane jûji no tsujiura is a kabuki play in five acts by Kawatake Mokuami, written in 1880. The title is often shortened to Shimoyo no kane (The bell on the frosty night).
