= Until 1917 the S.S. Leviathan was a German ship named "S.S. Vaterland". When in 1917 the Americans joined the allies in their war against the Germans, the ship (that had been laid up in the until then neutral USA), was confiscated by the Americans, renamed S.S. Leviathan and turned into a troopship.
