= Early and rare work by the artist, who moved to Groningen in 1922 to become a teacher at a college. He was mostly known as a literator and a poet, but he also staged plays and sculpted. He moved in the (literary) artistic circles of Groningen before World War II, i.a. De Ploeg, the authors Hendrik de Vries, Reinold Kuipers and Halbo C. Kool.
AND 7 other linocuts by the same, 1x signed, in the expressionist style of De Ploeg: landscapes and faces.
= The works can basically be divided into two different subject and style periods. From ±1948 to ±1960 a surrealist style with recurring figures in robes and fantasy animals and figures in desolate landscapes and from ±1958 to ±1968 the drawings have become abstract compositions. = Each gouache shows a harlequin in a different scene: A harlequin surrounded by cats and owls (39,5x84 cm.); a harlequin with singing donkey and three serious ministers (23x86 cm.) and a harlequin in a horse-drawn cart talking to a nobleman on horseback (31,5x79 cm.). All mounted on hardboard. Probably displays made for use in a bookshop.
- Sl. creased in lower margin en vague fold in upper right corner; yellowed strip (±6 cm.) in upper margin.
