= Ferguson, Books of secrets 2,III, p.52-55: "The book is different from any which have hitherto found place in these notes. It is an exposition of the art of miniature-painting (...) the preparation of the vellum, the colours and mixtures of them, the manner of laying them on (...) painting of the skin, of the hair (...) preparing ultramarine, carmine (...)". Ferguson lists 16 editions between 1673 and 1817.

= Very rare French edition of De Lairesse's Grondlegginge der tekenkonst (1701).. Only one complete copy of this edition (containing 120 plates) traced in the trade. An artist's manual containing i.a. late impressions of fine prints after H. GOLTZIUS and A. BLOEMAERT.
- A few leaves foxed in text; occas. sl. waterstained (final 6 index leaves worse); title-p. sl. fingersoiled and w. (old) owner's stamp. Otherwise near fine copy.

= With 2 loosely inserted academic drawings (of one only the lower half). The 2nd edition of this artist's manual, of which the principal design is "to encourage the study of the most profound part of painting, the characteristics of the passions; in order to which, the sacred histories, represented in the inimitable Cartons of Raphael, have been considered separately, and the principal characters in each described and referred to in the several heads in the work (...)" (introduction).
- Fine copy w. the following minor defects: small old annot. in pen and ink on title-p.; a few lvs. w. small marginal waterstain; a few lvs. vaguely foxed. Binding partly (heavily) rubbed; a few wormholes in backstrip; lacks one of the small, pinlike catches.

The first two parts are the second edition of the first history of the Jesuit involvement in Asia (first published Dillingen, 1571); part 2 contains the 40 most important Jesuit letters from Japan (1548-1464, by i.a. Paulus Japonicus, Franciscus Xaverius, Cosmus Turrianus, Gaspar Vilela and Aloisius Frois, the one from 1548 (by Paulus Japonicus) being the first Latin-language Jesuit letter from Japan ever); the third part is an update containing letters of 1568-1570, first published in this edition.
- First map of the Sunda islands partly handcol. w. blue ink; occas. sl. foxed/ browned; some lvs. and plates in first part waterstained in upper section.
= Contains maps of Borneo, Sumatra and Java and of "Malakka, Siam, Cambodia, Chiampa, Kochinchina, Laos, Pegu enz." and a nice fold. view of Batavia.

- Lacks the map of Japan; engr. title probably added later (loose and margins cut short); sm. dam. spots in upper part engr. title; p.8-9 and 125-130 severly soiled and 1x w. large tear; p. 145-150 browned (incl. the map of Fokien); all lvs. (incl. maps) waterstained in outer margins, the following maps w. some offsetting of colour from cartouche: "Imperii Sinarum Nova Descriptio"/ "Kiangsi (...)"/ "Nanking (...)" (also w. sm. dam. to left figure cartouche).
= Koeman 2:521 with allegorical title-page 2:26B. The first and only Dutch edition of the first European atlas of China. The hand-coloured double-page maps consist of a general map of China and 15 maps of the provinces. The maps with beautiful cartouches surrounded by Chinese people in traditional dress from the corresponding region in beautiful contemporary handcolouring. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE LXXXIII.
