"Deze kaart behoort tot de 'contrefaçon hollandaise', de Sanson/ Jaillot-atlas die door Pieter Mortier in Amsterdam werd uitgegeven. In de Nederlandse productie van atlassen neemt deze atlas een uitzonderingspositie in omdat, hoewel hij in Nederland is gemaakt, op de kaarten en op het titelblad van de atlas alleen Jaillot te Parijs als uitgever is vermeld. Noch op de kaarten, noch op het titelblad is de naam van Mortier vermeld. (...) Pieter Mortier heeft op de kaart van Holland veel veranderd." "Vernieuwend is de kaart wat betreft vormgeving. Na een hele reeks kaarten met het noorden links of rechts ligt het noorden nu weer boven. De plaatsnamen zijn horizontaal geplaatst en niet meer kris kras door elkaar. De kaart is ruim en overzichtelijk" (Blonk-van der Wijst 64, the French example for this map). Very decorative.

= Excellent map with a fine armorial title-cartouche by M.A. Stagnon after C.N. Cochin II, and a large vignette by C.-E. Patas after C.D.J. Eisen depicting the presentation of the map to emperor Joseph II. Sheet XXI presents a plan of Brussels: "Plan Topographique de la Ville de Bruxelles et de ses environs". The map was first produced in three coloured manuscript copies, each on 275 sheets, between 1771 and 1777 on the scale of 1:11.520. It was inspired by and based on the geometrical method used for the large Carte de France surveyed by C.F. Cassini thirty years earlier. The manuscript maps then led to the publication of an engraved reduction on the scale of 1:86.400 and named Carte Chorographique, or Carte Marchande since this edition was meant for sale. The first edition of the famous "Kaart van Kraijenhoff". "Toch moet ook hier weer gezegd worden dat zijn in 1822 voltooide Choro-Topographische Kaart (...) de beste in die tijd bestaande gedrukte overzichtskaart van Nederland was. Hoewel de topografie niet gedetailleerd weergegeven is, heeft de kaart ook nu nog betekenis voor historisch geografisch onderzoek door de goede en meetkundig juiste voorstelling van de hoofdlijnen der Nederlandse topografie omstreeks het jaar 1800. Het is de eerste kaart van Nederland waarbij het grondgebied in zijn geheel in een kaartering opgenomen is (...)" (Koeman, Handleiding p.63).
