= Kano Tanyu was one of the leading Japanese painters of the Kanô school. The gibbons hanging from a tree is a common theme in Japanese painting, called Monkeys Reaching For the Moon. The gibbons hang down and cling from all angles to reach the water below, where the moon is reflected. Unfortunately, several splashes can be seen which has distorted the elusive reflection. This tale represents the grasping soul of humanity.
