= Willems 1419; cf. Tchemerzine IX, 66-67, listing the first edition published in 1656-1657; cat. Imprimé en Hollande p.48: "De jansenisten - genoemd naar de voorman van deze religieuze beweging Cornelis Jansen - trachtten op katholieke grondslag het werk van Augustinus te hernieuwen. Centrum van de beweging was het klooster Port Royal nabij Parijs. Toen in 1653 paus Innocentius XI enkele uitspraken van Jansen veroordeelde, reageerde Antoine Arnauld met een apologie van Jansenius. Tegen de veroordeling van dit werk door de Sorbonne, het machtscentrum van de jezuieten, polemiseerde Pascal, onder pseudoniem, met zijn Lettres de Louis de Montalte à un Provincial de ses amis. De delen verschenen eerst afzonderlijk en clandestien van 1656 tot 1657 en werden al snel verboden. De eerste integrale uitgave verscheen bij Elzevier. Het werk is de geschiedenis vooral ingegaan als een schoolvoorbeeld van heldere polemiek. Ook de latere filosofen, die overigens niets moesten hebben van Pascals antihumanistische opvattingen, bewonderden de zuiverheid en natuurlijkheid van stijl en argumentatie."
