- Originally the drawing was a much larger and rectangular of shape. For unknown reasons the sides were blackened, probably by the artist himself as the final drawing only shows this part of the composition. On verso the shape of a construction, i.a. on the right an overhanging roof can still be seen.

= Study for the larger red chalk drawing, dated 1770 and sold at Sotheby's, London in July, 1998 (lot 85). Provenance: sold at auction Paul Brandt, Amsterdam in february 1971. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE XCV.
