Ik vernam dat men er u een verwijt van maakt dat uw aap ten slotte aan 't spreken is gegaan. Maar in een verhaal van Kafka verandert een man in een reuzenhagedis die zijn verder leven slijt tegen het plafond van zijn kamer (...). En Wells heeft een heel boek geschreven over een man die er in geslaagd is zichzelf onzichtbaar te maken. Toch worden beide verhalen terecht beschouwd als meesterstukken.
