= The second revised and best edition (first 1668). Tiele 298; Gay 219; Mendelssohn II, p.119. The first large general description of the African continent. The work is based on the early accounts of the Portuguese and Spanish explorers, the English works by Purchass and Jarrick, the journals and descriptions of Dutch navigators like Van Noort, Van Neck, Linschoten, Spilbergen, but especially on unpublished reports and eye-witness accounts of Dutch merchants, visitors and soldiers. Very detailed on the West Coast, where the Dutch ivory-, gold- and slave-trade flourished and on Angola (Luanda was captured by a WIC fleet in 1647). On the settlement on the Cape only a cursory note is found, while the surrounding tribes are described in remarkable detail. The second part, devoted to the African islands, from Malta to Madagascar, includes an ample account of the French colonization of the latter. The work is famous for its splendid detailed maps and plates, i.a. engraved after drawings by Reinier Noomsz (Zeeman). SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE LXXI.

= Ad. 1: ''Wie na Sinck tot halverwege de jaren vijftig verantwoordelijk was voor de tijdrekenundige en astronomische gegevens van de comptoiralmanak is onduidelijk. De titelpaginas vermelden geen naam meer. Aan deze situatie kwam een einde toen in de persoon van Dirck Rembrantsz van Nierop (1610-1682) een waardige opvolger van Sinck gevonden werd. De door Saeghman uitgegeven Kleyne comptoir almanach voor 1656 (8vo) is de oudste almanak met zijn naam. Daarna is Van Nierops naam tot aan zijn dood in 1682, met uitzondering van de jaren 1658-1660, met de almanakken van Saeghman verbonden. = Rare first German translation of the famous Novus orbis regionum containing voyages of Cadamosto, the three voyages of Columbus, Nino, Pinzon, Vespucci, Cabral, and others. "A German translation by Michael Herr; it is less known and much rarer than the original. The version is somewhat broad, and is distinguished by a certain originality in expression. Although it has no map, it has, on the other hand, the merit of being augmented in the text. It contains a full translation of Peter Martyr's Decades, folios 174-229, and also his three books De Legatione Babylonica, folios 235-248, both wanting in all the different Latin editions. Besides, it contains all the pieces of the first Latin edition of 1532, except Munster's Introductio in tabulam geograph, to which the map belongs, and would, therefore, have been superfluous in this edition" (Sabin).
