Wolff, Vienna, 1917?), (10) leaves incl. 8 col. lithogr. plates w. text in right margin, 2 uncol. ills. (title-p. and dedication) and orig. cl. w. mounted plate on frontcover, all by O. KOKOSCHKA, all but 3 monogrammed "OK" on the stone, printed in 500 copies (225), obl. 4to.

= The financier of the Wiener Werkstätte, Franz Waerndorfer, commissioned Oskar Kokoschka to create a fairytale book for his children in 1907. It was published by the Wiener Werkstätte in 500 copies, and was presented at the Kunstschau exhibition of 1908. The number of copies ordered was disappointingly small and only a few copies were bound at the time. In 1917 Kurt Wolff reissued 275 copies of the remaining printrun in a lim. numb. edition and in a binding sl. different from the original binding (without use of gilt thread). This is an unnumb. copy (without Kurt Wolff's colophon ticket on lower pastedown) but without gilt thread in the binding. At the time of commissioning (1907) Oskar Kokoschka was still a student at Vienna's Kunstgewerbeschule. The fairytale that he wrote shows his strong Expressionist tendencies and is not a typical children's book. As Waerndorfer wrote to Kokoschka's former teacher C.O. (Jentsch 1). Vom Jugendstil zum Bauhaus. Deutsche Buchkunst 1895-1930, no. 81; Raabe 166, 1; Werner/ Schweiger p.86ff; Bolliger II, 243 ("Prachtvolles Werk des Wiener Jugendstils. Sehr selten" and cf. The Artist and the Book 147 (on the ed. Leipsic, Kurt Wolff, 1917): "(...) This book and Slevogt's Sindbad, Berlin, 1908 (...) are the first important modern livres de peintres from east of the Rhein." SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE XXXIX.
