71/2594 Passe the Younger, C. de. Hortus Floridus in quo rariorum & minus vulgarium florum Icones ad vivam veramque formam accuratissime delineatae. Arnhem, J. Janssonius, 1614-(1616), 4 parts in 1 vol., 2 general titles (1x engr. general title in Latin and 1x letterpress general title in Dutch), 3 div. letterpress titles in Latin, (2 (Latin),28 (Dutch)); (2); (6); (2) textp., 5 engr. views of a garden (2 identical/ 3 identical), 1 plate ("Epigramma") and 100 plates, contemp. vellum w. gilt mirror piece in centre of both covers, surrounded by a single gilt fillet border w. floral corner pieces, oblong 4to.

= Provenance: A.M. Ledebuer [= Adrianus Marinus Ledeboer, bibliophile and bibliographer] (old annot. in pen on upper pastedown). Veldman, Crispijn de Passe and his Progeny p.205-212 ("the masterpiece of the then 20 or 21-year old Crispijn the Younger"); cf. Nissen, BBI 1494; Hunt 199; Hollstein 171. The Dutch text issue of this famous and influential florilegium. Since virtually no two copies of the Hortus Floridus agree in collation and state of the plates, with a great discrepancy between the number of plates (therefore the lot is sold not subject to return), we give an exact description of the present copy. Engr. general title with the portraits of Dodonaeus and Clusius; 1 garden view, 26 unnumbered letterpress textpages in double columns as index to the first 4 parts; I (SPRING), 41 plates (as in printed index); II (SUMMER), letterpress divis. title in Latin w. index of prints for Spring on verso, 1 garden view, 20 plates numbered 1-20 (as in Dutch index, but one more plate than in printed Latin index ); III. (AUTUMN), letterpress divis. title in Latin, verso blank, allegorical engr. "Epigramma" plate of Flora, index of plates for Autumn (listing 24 numb. and 2 unnumb. plates), verso w. Latin text, (2)p. dedication in Latin, 1 garden view, 27 plates numbered 1-25 and extra "Radix" plate (as in index) and 1 extra plate of the "Bol van den Indi: Zee Narcis", also numbered 25 (not in printed index); IV. (WINTER), letterpress divis. title in Latin, 1 garden view, 12 plates numbered 1-12 (as in printed index). All plates with printed text in Latin on verso, many plates with insects and backgrounds. The garden views, the Flora plate and the ornamental title not mentioned in the printed index.

"(...) the Hortus Floridus of Crispin de Passe, admirable though it is, has received almost exaggerated praise. Mr. Savage (...) finds him "facile princeps" among the flower-engravers of the early seventeenth century. (...) The most striking feature is the degree of atmosphere that has been achieved with so difficult and mechanical instrument as the burin. A comparison with the work of Sweert or Besler makes this doubly apparent, and even the best plates of de Bry look a little stiff and formal beside those of the Hortus Floridus. (...) Delightful touches of humour enliven de Passe's work: bees and butterflies hover about the flowers; insects crawl among the leaves; a little mouse gnaws contentedly at an uprooted corm." (Blunt p.97-99). Very rare. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE CXVII.
