= The first edition with the plates by MEISONNIER. Ray, p.256: "(...) a leading Romantic illustrator. The book that comes to mind is Les contes rémois. Chevigné's little stories in verse set in an earlier period are mild imitations of La Fontaine's Contes et nouvelles which feature for the most part the tribulations of old husbands and amorous priests. They would hardly be remembered today if it were not for Meissonier's delicate and precise vignettes. He had a style which made everything he touched interesting". Carteret, Trésor III, p.158: "Un des plus jolis livres du XIXe siècle. Cette illustration des Contes rémois, admirablement gravée sur bois, restera comme une des plus belles productions romantiques." = LARGE PAPER copy of the preferred Italian edition, with the rare portrait of Boccaccio by LEMPEREUR after GRAVELOT and with at least 22 plates in the first (paraphed) edition (possibly the paraphs on the other plates were cut off in the binding process). Cohen/ De Ricci 158-160; Cohen 1588; Ray 15 ("one of the masterpieces of the illustrated book"). The binder Christian Samuel Kalthoeber (1775-1817), of German origin, emigrated to London and succeeded his former master Baumgarten, after which he became a sought-after binder. Copy with the plate of a stranded whale, not called for in the index. On this print by W. van der Gouwen after H. Goltzius and J. Matham see Ingalls, Whaling Prints 359: "It is particularly important as a prototype for both whale print iconography and seventeenth-century Dutch landscapes. This particular depiction of a sperm whale was to be copied for two hundred years in European stranded whale and natural history prints. Similarly, the device of depicting the receding shoreline appears throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in Dutch prints and paintings."
