69/6398 [Merian, M. and C.]. Merck, J. (1619-1669). Lot of 28 preparatory drawings for the fortification plans published in the Topographia Germaniae Inferioris by M. and C. MERIAN, dated "Mens: Mart. 1646" (and similar) through "Mense Februar: ao 1658", all monogrammed "MH", all numb. (between "XVII" and "CXXII"), pen and brown ink and watercolour on paper w. foolscap watermark, brown framing line, all images ±17x29 cm. and all lvs. ±20x31 cm.

- All but two in fine condition: "Benningswouter schans" is waterstained in left margin and "Coevoorden" w. sm. dam. spot. All tipped-in under passepartout. Formerly bound together with a much larger number of drawings.

= Very nice collection of preparatory drawings made by Johann Merck, draughtsman for the Merian company, that were later published in Matthäus and Caspar Merian's Topographia Germaniae Inferioris of 1654 ("Utrecht" dated later). Contains "Limburg" (no. XVII), "Schans de Vooren" (no. XXVI), "Hemmert" (no. XXXI), "Loevenstein" (no. XXXIII), "St. Martin op 't Eijlandt van Hoogerwerve" (no. XLIV), "Fort Frederich Hendrick" (no. XLV), "Blaugaren/ Lillo" (no. XLVI), "Liefkenshoek" (no. XLVII), "Crijsschans" (no. XLVIII), "Antwerpen" (no. XLIX), "St. Anna Schans" (no. L), "Keisershoft/ Sandtbergen" (no. LI), "Birvliet" (no. LVIII), "Ysendyck" (no. LIX), "Osburg" (no. LX), "Damme" (no. LXII), "Stern schans/ Cassandria" (no. LXIV), "Vlissingen" (no. LXV), "Doesburg" (no. LXIX), "Brevoort" (no. LXX), "Coevoorden" (no. LXXVI), "Benningswouterschans" (no. LXXVIII), "Lieroort" (no. LXXIX), "Ter Gouda" (no. CIX), "Oudewaeter" (no. CX), "Leerdam" (no. CXV), "Asperen" (no. CXVII) and "Utrecht" (no. CXXII). Some of the drawings contain fine ornamental legend cartouches (with Dutch/ German text), which were not copied into the copperplates. Also the historical annotations (present on four drawings, all German text) and a few nice pictorial elements, such as windmills, churches and city gates, did not find their way into the printed work, nor does some topographical information in the legends (although some other legends were extended in print), all of which gives these drawings an even greater artistic and historical value of their own. From the annotation on the plan of "Limburg", for example, we learn that "Anno 1632.den 8. September. hat Stackenbroechs diese stadt ingenommen". SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE CLXXXI.
