= Around 1850 the relations between the Netherlands and the new kingdom of Belgium improved and there was a growing need for good railway connections between North and South. The so-called island of Dordrecht was a pivotal point of the new railway line between Antwerp and Rotterdam, so in 1866 the construction was started of a railway bridge over the Old Meuse near Dordrecht and was completed in 1872. These images (from a series of in total 9?) show various stages of construction, from the building of the pillars in 1866 up to the completion in 1872.

= Cf. J.B. Bedaux, Jo Uiterwaal en Piet Elling (1975). Photographs probably taken by Elling himself. The photographs show 9 different sculptures, i.a. "Broeder", portrait of Marcí Kárász, a kneeling figure and an abstract standing figure. Piet Elling was educated from 1913 onwards on the Kunstnijverheidschool in Utrecht, where he met Jo Uiterwaal. Both became heavily influenced by the modernists of the time, i.a. Archipenko and Huszar. Elling was also attracted to Egyptian sculpture.
