= Second edition of the famous analysis - and above all criticism - of the Venetian state and of the reasons for its decadence, by the secretary of an ambassy from the French court to Venice. Amelot de la Houssaie was imprisoned in the Bastille for this publication. Immediately after his release after six weeks however, he published a second edition with a supplement, which was suppressed. Due to its controversy the work became extremely popular and passed through no less than twenty-two editions in three years.
