"Lady Mary Wortley Montagu's husband was appointed ambassador to the Porte in 1716, and she accompanied him to Constantinople. During her sojourn in Turkey she recorded her observations and experiences in a journal (destroyed after her death) which provided material for her actual letters to her friends (...). These are not actual letters, though headed and dated close to the dates of real letters. The form is partly fiction but provides the substance of her life abroad and her opinions on Turkish life and customs". (Blackmer). "Sometimes I see this collection of travel writers as a 'monstrous Regiment of women', a tribe of eccentrics forging their way through the years further and further away from the familiar. If this is so, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu must surely be one of its chiefs. The unprecedented adventurousness of her journey to Turkey and the skill with which she described its strangeness, set her well apart from the rest. She was the first authoress to travel abroad for mere curiosity's sake, and call herself, with considerable pride, 'a traveller'." (Robinson).
