= The first letter is mainly to congratulate Van Wessem, the former director of Stedelijk Museum De Lakenhal, and his wife with their new-born child. Engelman mentions that he looks forward to an exhibition on Floris Verster: "... In the second letter Engelman mentions the Verster exhibition again. In the third letter Engelman complains about his deteriorating health ("Ik heb nu 10 jaar hoofdpijn."). This is the reason why he missed a Kees Verwey exhibition. Engelman also writes: "Ik heb 'zijn' Werner Haftmann gekocht. Vreeselijk duur, mijn laatste geld. Talentloos. Toen is hij maar N.S.B.-er geworden."
