= Lust en Leering p.295f and 450. The first Dutch translation of De L'Epine's Histoire aussi intéressante qu'invraisemblable de l'intrepide capitain Castagnette, neveu de l'homme à la tête de bois (Paris, 1862). It is a story about the senselessness of waging war against all odds and may be summarized as follows: a soldier (Jan Kanon) first looses one of his eyes, then, when he is serving in Napoléon's army, his left arm, subsequently his legs and his face (which is replaced with a face of wax). During a spell of fighting in the desert, during which his face starts to melt, it is replaced by a face of silver. And in Russia, finally, he is hit in his back by a cannonball which cannot be removed by the surgeon. When Jan Kanon hears of Napoléon's death, he falls asleep in front of his fire and his wooden legs catch fire. Eventually the flames reach the cannonball and it explodes. Rare.
