66 6374 Merian M and C Merck J 1619 1669 66 6374 Merian M and C Merck J 1619 1669
66/6374 [Merian, M. and C.]. Merck, J. (1619-1669). Lot of 10 preparatory drawings for the fortification plans published in the Topographia Germaniae Inferioris by M. and C. MERIAN, dated "Mens: April. 1646" (and similar) through "Mense Januario 1647", all monogrammed "MH", all numb. (between "XXV" and "XLIII"), pen and brown ink and watercolour on paper w. foolscap watermark, brown framing line, all images ±17x29 cm. and all lvs. ±20x31 cm.

- All in fine condition. Formerly bound together with a much larger number of drawings.

= Very nice collection of preparatory drawings made by Johann Merck, draughtsman for the Merian company, that were later published in Matthäus and Caspar Merian's Topographia Germaniae Inferioris of 1654. Contains "Ravenstein" (no. XXV), "Crevenceur" (no. XXIX), "S'Hertogenbosch" (no. XXX), "Heusden" (no. XXXII), "Worckum" (no. XXXIV), "Gertruydenberg" (no. XXXVII), "Clundert" (no. XXXIX), "Willemstadt" (no. XL), "Steenbergen" (no. XLI) and "Bergen op Zoom" (no. XLIII). Some of the drawings contain fine ornamental legend cartouches (with Dutch/ German text), which were not copied into the copperplates. Also the historical annotations (present on four drawings, all German text) and a few nice pictorial elements, such as windmills on the ramparts of Den Bosch and a small ship passing Geertruidenberg, did not find their way into the printed work, nor does some topographical information in the legends (although some other legends were extended in print), all of which gives these drawings an only greater artistic and historical value of their own. From the annotation on the plan of "s'Hertogenbosch", for example, we learn that "Anno 1629.den i. Maij. ist S: Hoochheit Friderich Hendrich Printz von Orangien von diese Stadt gekommen. Der 14e. September ist diese Stadt an S: Hoogheijt mit accord übergegangen", and "Anno 1622. hat Marcquis Spinola diese Stadt [Steenbergen] ingenommen." SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE CLV.
