= The rare first editions of Bontekoe's and Raven's itineraries, only seldom found bound together as they were intended to be. Tiele 158; Tiele, Mémoire 168; Landwehr, VOC 377; Buisman 204/ 210; Cat. NHSM p.173; Verhoeven/ Verkruijsse 1646-01; Rouffaer/ Muller p.52; Scheepers I, 587; Hill 152; Muller p.161: Howgego B131. Bontekoe's popular itinerary, often reprinted up to the nineteenth century. The voyage of Bontekoe became a byword for a voyage full of adversities. The ship caught fire after passing Madagascar and exploded when the flames reached the powder-room. The survivors continued their voyage in a shallop and after much suffering and many adventures they were rescued in Straits Sunda by a Dutch fleet under F. Houtman. The rest of the journal narrates Bontekoe's further experiences in Indonesia and China until his safe arrival in his hometown Hoorn. "Bontekoe's Journal (...) became one of the most popular books of its genre. Written in a simple, earthy language, it ran to thirty editions in the following fifty years and was translated into nearly every European language. At one time it was reckoned to be out-selling the New Testament." (Howgego). "Le journal du voyage de Raven est également de la main du voyageur. C'est une histoire de naufrage. Le récit de 1634 comprend un hivernage dans l'île du Spitsberg. Dans l'extrait du journal de Raven de 1633, on trouve l'anecdote d'un certain Thijs Syvertsz qui fut merveilleusement sauvé à Jan Mayen Eylandt. Le récit de Pickman reproduit une aventure semblable." (Tiele Mémoire, p.216). SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE CXXXVI.
