= The early publications of the Casanova memoires are a bit of a conundrum. This set is compiled from two different and very early pirate editions. Volume 1 to 5 are a pirate edition after the first edition by F.A. Brockhaus from Leipsic. The first edition was a German translation from the French manuscript. The manuscript ended up in Leipsic after Casanova's death, the German translation was done by Wilhelm von Schütz. After the great success of the Brockhaus publication, volumes 1-5 were illegally translated (back again) into french and published by Tournachon (and were heavily censored by the translator). In 1825 after the 5th volume Von Schütz ended his collaboration with Brockhaus for the official German edition, so the pirated edition by Tournachon ended there. From 1826 to 1838 Brockhaus published his own French translation (which is considered the true first French edition). Volume 6 to 10 of our copy (originally in 10 vols.) are a very early pirate edition after this French Brockhaus edition. Rives Childs B 1 13 (vol. 6-10).
