= Gobius (1815-1899) became an amateur artist and art collector later in life. The balloon was launched in Utrecht by a Joseph Liebhart in the garden of a certain C. van Leeuwen. Under the balloon was a gondola carrying probably a puppet made of straw and 2 live animals. At a certain height the gondola was released from the balloon and descended with the help of a parachute.

"Heemstede" (by Johannes Diderik BIERENS DE HAAN), a landmark near the Munterslaan Haarlem (by Johan VISSER), Brouwerskolk near Haarlem (by Christine STOEL), Amsterdamse Poort (by "A. VAN PUTTEN"), but also: "De Waag, Craan, en blauwe stene Brugh te Hoorn" (anonymous). Provenance: the collection A.M. van den Broek.

= On laid paper with partial watermark "RC". The bird of paradise is depicted in the typical way without its legs. When these birds were captured in the New Guinea tropics their legs were removed by local taxidermists in order to export them. Europeans made the assumption that they were legless.
