Kunisada (1786-1865). (Actor). Col. woodcut ôban, signed Gototei Kunisada-ga, publisher Nishimuraya Yohachi, w. kiwame-seal, 1830.
- Restored and doubled w. Japanese to close wormholes and a dam. section in the lower right corner; colours sl. faded.
= Rare.
- Trifle soiled; w. one sm. pinhole and a tiny repaired section in the upper left corner, otherwise fine.
- Fine print.
= Shows Nakamura Utamigi(?) as Matahei from Chikamatsu Monzaemon's play Keisei Hangonkô.
- Lacks (sm.) part of upper and lower right corner; horizontal crease in the centre. Nevertheless an attactive print.
Hiroshige (1797-1858). (Warrior subduing two men). Col. woodcut ôban, signed Ichiryûsai Hiroshige-ga, publ. unread, w. censor seals and zodiac seal, 1852.
- A few sm. dam. spots in right margin; sm. annot. in ballpoint and traces of Japanese print text (transfer?) on verso. Probably middle panel of a triptych.
- Tatsu: a few pinholes and one sm. wormhole on the left margin; Inu: two sm. (8-10 mm. and 3-4 mm.) horizontal tears in the righ margin; Hitsuji: three sm. wormholes on the left margin; all otherwise fine.
- Mounted on board along top edge; sl. dam. section in upper right corner.
ADDED: a later recutting of UTAGAWA YOSHIIKU (1833-1904), Quarreling and Scuffling in Woman's Bathhouse (Kurabe koshi yuki no Yanagiya) (col. woodcut, approx. 42x20,5 cm.).
- Rebacked w. Japanese; remnants of previous mounting on thick paper on verso; paper sl. worn.
= From the kabuki play Futatsu chôchô kuruwa nikki (A Diary of two Butterflies in the Pleasure Quarter).
- Vertical crease in lefthand leaf of one double-p. woodcut; all woodcuts sl. rubbed/ fingersoiled in lower outer corner. Wrappers creased and rubbed.
= This volume consists of a selection of 6 woodcuts from the total of 22 woodcuts that are contained in the 3 volumes. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE LX.
- Two sm. pinholes in upper and lower corners; closed binding marks along left margin; otherwise a good impression.
= No. 5 from the series Taiheiki eiyu den (Heroic Stories of the Taiheiki), showing the actor Tatenaka Kanbyoye(?) Shigeharu standing in a room with a globe.
= A hashira-e with annotations for the colour. With the collector's mark of Japanese art dealer and collector Felix Tikotin (1893-1986) on mount. According to the annotation below, the hunter is Ôta Dôkan (1423-1486) and perhaps the Japanese text translates as "I am sorry that I have no umbrella".
- Two prints w. some defects; 4 prints (sl.) yellowed.

- Vertical line in the paper in the middle of the print; a few expertly restored sections (nigh invisible). A fine copy.
- Partly sl. wormholed, mostly in blank margins. Lacks title-strip; string broken but holding; wr. soiled.

- Lacks 3 of 4 slipcases, 1x dam. Occas. trifle foxed; 2 vols. hinges weakening; 1 vol. last few lvs. and endpapers sl. wormholed; 1p. in vol. 4 w. handwritten text in Japanese (illegible) in sepia ink. Joints starting/ split(ting); bindings sl. rubbed.
= The first translation into modern Japanese of this classic. The covers show Heian-period (794-1185) scenes in the four seasons.
- Two unobtrusive cracks, in spine and lower edge frontcover.
= Probably sandalwood carving from Mysore. Can be used for storing documents.
- A fingernail size worn spot in top margin; a few small shaved spots in surrounding borders and some tiny flaked areas in blue swirling lines.
= Provenance: J.W. Niemeijer (director of the Rijksprentenkabinet from 1974-1990, and born in the sign of Sagittarius). Remarkable and very attractive richly decorated miniature, showing Sagittarius in the central panel surrounded by birds perched upon vine leaves with hanging bunches of grapes; this central panel is flanked on the left and right side by an intricate pattern of flowers, leaves, tiny dots and swirling decorated blue lines on gilt ground. Possibly one of a complete series of the signs of the Zodiac. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE LX.
