= Second Dutch ed. of (the anonymously publ.) Vestiges of the Natural History of Creation (1844) by Robert Chambers, a collection of evolutionary ideas on the transmutation of species. The work, both controversial and popular, preceded the publication of Darwin's On the Origin of Species (1859). "The Vestiges played a significant role in mid-nineteenth-century biology. By presenting an evolutionary view of nature, it received the first wave of reaction and thus eased the way for Darwin's Origin of Species fifteen years later." (DSB III, p.192).

= French ed. of the 6th ed. of l'Uomo di genio (1894), first publ. as Genio e Follia (1864), by the influential Italian criminologist Cesare Lombroso (1835-1909). PMM 364: "[Lombroso] maintained that criminals are more often found to suffer from physical, nervous and mental abnormalities than non-criminals, and that these abnormalities are either inherited or the result of physical degeneration. This reference of mental phenomena to purely physical and biological causes follows Comtian theory, and like it requires forcing and exaggeration of the evidence. The fallacies involved were revealed in Lombroso's later Genio e Follia, 1864, in which he unsuccessfully attempted to show that genius was also a form of degeneration akin to madness."
