The Narrative, published in 3 vols. in 1856 in Washington by A.O.P. Nicholson, deals with Perry's expedition, that aimed to establish formal relations between the USA and Japan. The expedition was of great importance, because, ultimately, it forced the Japanese to be more open to other countries in general and become more involved in international politics.
