A desirable copy, with consistently beautiful contemporary handcolouring of the detailed plan, the magnificent profile, the coats of arms and the views.

Of this most spectacular of all Dutch town-atlases he writes the following: "In 1774 laat het stadsbestuur uit de voorraad kaartbladen en stadsgezichten "atlassen" samenstellen. Ook deze worden weer uitgereikt aan Vroedschapsleden en "ministers", dat zijn de hogere stadsfunctionarissen, als de pensionaris en de secretaris. Ook moeten er, volgens een besluit van 1777, steeds twee atlassen in voorraad gehouden worden, blijkbaar om als relatiegeschenk gebruikt te kunnen worden. (...) Een vraag die door Van 't Hoff niet meer beantwoord werd, is die naar de topografische betekenis van de kaart van De Vou en De Hooghe. Bekijken we de kaart, dan is echter duidelijk wat deze betekenis moet zijn. De zeer grote schaal van de kaart, de weergave in opstand van alle bebouwing in en buiten de stad, de afbeelding van menselijke bezigheden, met name op de scheepswerven, geven een visueel beeld van de stad aan het eind van de zeventiende eeuw, dat door geen enkel ander document geëvenaard wordt. Nergens anders wordt de inrichting van het "lanen"-gebied op een zo treffende wijze getoond. Waar de kaart getoetst wordt aan andere kartografische en visuele documenten krijgt men als regel een indruk van grote betrouwbaarheid. De kaart toont ons Rotterdam zoals het op het toppunt van zijn bloei in de Gouden Eeuw was, de zevende stad in de in de Staten van Holland geldende rangorde, maar de tweede havenstad van de Republiek der Verenigde Nederlanden. De hieraan verbonden status moest deze kaart weergeven. Dat is gelukt, want van de in de zeventiende eeuw in ons land uitgegeven stadsplattegronden is die van Rotterdam door Joannes de Vou en Romeyn de Hooghe de grootste, waarmee een nog steeds in iedere rechtgeaarde Rotterdammer levende behoefte was bevredigd. Terecht zond het Rotterdamse gemeentebestuur in 1867 dan ook een exemplaar van de plattegrond in voor de Wereldtentoonstelling in Parijs." (Ratsma p.58). The earliest versions of this town atlas usually have 12 views. The extra 13th view in our copy is a view of new "De Beurse" by François van BLEYSWYCK, who made this print in 1743 (the building of the new stock-exchange of Rotterdam was finished in 1736). The old stock-exchange is also included in the views. This shows that the copies that were produced of the De Vou atlas were adapted to reflect the new circumstances in the 18th century. These adapted copies were bound and gifted to the important members of the municipality of Rotterdam. SEE COLOUR ILLUSTRATIONS PLATE XCVIII.

Olearius (Ölschläger), Danish secretary to the mission sent by the Duke of Holstein-Gottorp to the Czar of Russia and the Shah of Persia in 1633-39. = Interesting plea concerning the ownership of Castle Toutenburg in Vollenhove (Overijssel). The lawsuit, between the claimants on behalf of Levina Schenck and her husband Adriaan van Mangelaar and the defendants, on behalf of the family Van Boetzelaar, continued for over almost a century, and was eventually settled in favour of the latter family. Rare.

= First French edition of this rare pamphlet. First published in 1657 as Killing no Murder. It is an apology for tyrannicide ironically dedicated to Cromwell himself. This work was published to instigate the assassination of Oliver Cromwell, it is one of the most well-known works to be written during the Protectorate. The 3 questions treated in this pamphlet are: 1. "Whether my Lord Protector be a Tyrant of not?". 2. "If he be, whether it is Lawful to do Justice upon him without solemnity, that is, to kill him?". 3. "If it be lawful, whether it is likely to prove profitable or noxious to the commonwealth?".
