- Contents fine. Spine-ends and corners of boards sl. worn; wrs. (sl.) frayed along extremities; 2 vols. lack front- or backwr.

= Interesting plates, bound in pairs (except for the folding plate), in which the artist Restout shows the reader a picture of the patient as he was before and another of him as he was after his miraculous recovery. Occasionally he also engraved the specific part of the body that was cured on the wall of the room in which the scene is situated (eyes in the case of blind man, a leg and a breast in the case of lame woman also suffering from pain in her breast). On the author: "Magistrate and author; a libertine, he converted after visiting the tomb of Jansenist deacon François de Pâris in St Medard cemetery, and spent the rest of his life defending the miracles allegedly accomplished by the deacon, whom he considered a saint, and the pilgrims who experienced convulsions at the latter's tomb (the "Convulsionnaires of Saint-Médard"). He wrote "La vérité des miracles opéres par l'intercession de M. de Paris" (1737), an account of the miracles attributed to Pâris, illustrated by plates engraved after Jean Restout; arrested after presenting a copy of the book to Louis XIV, he was imprisoned in La Bastille while copies of the book were destroyed, however a second edition was immediately published in Utrecht." = Cf. Dorbon-Ainé 3689-3691; Rosenthal 2273; Caillet 8755-8756; Barbier II, p.775 (all mentioning other editions). Noël Antoine Pluche (1688-1761) was director of the French College at Lyon until his refusal to adhere to the 'Unigenitus Bull' (published on September 8th 1713). Condemnation of 101 theses from the book 'Réflexions morales sur le Nouveau Testament' by Quesnel forced him to resign. "Pluche restated his opposition to the cosmologies proposed by the physicists. He also attempted to demonstrate that monotheism preceded polytheism" (DSB IX, p.44). The first volume is devoted mostly to Egyptian mythology, and seems based on Wharburton's studies of hieroglyphics. The second volume is a chronological review of creation theories.
