= The first publication by the Caxton Press (Denis Glover) and the breakthrough of Ernest Mervyn Taylor as wood engraving artist. The book contains twenty-two engravings of indigenous subjects published attractively between red cloth boards. Glover embarked on the project after seeing some of Taylors engravings in The Arts in New Zealand. The result was a landmark in fine printing and the first of its kind to be produced in New Zealand. All 500 copies sold within weeks (cf. G. Ogilvie, Denis Glover: His Life, Auckland, 1999, p. 320-21).
