Bélidor was the first to use differential and integral equations for the solution of hydrotechnical problems. The work remained the standard authority on practical water engineering long after most of the techniques it describes became obsolete.

= The first French edition of Lombroso's influential study on criminology, first published in Italian in 1876. "(...) 'Criminal Man' was a revolutionary work which not only caused a considerable stir when it first came out but had a practical effect which was wholly beneficial. The division which it indicated between the congenital criminal and those who were tempted to crime by circumstances has had a lasting effect on penal theory." (PMM 364). Lombroso's theory states that the criminal type is an atavistic and amoral individual committing crimes by biological necessity, his/ her typical criminal anatomical features being an indication thereof.
