"In 1943 the firm (...) was directed to publish, for the benefit of the German army, a guide titled Das Generalgouvernement, the name used by the Nazis for the puppet state they set up in what was left of Poland. The book makes depressing reading, even if its justifications for the German conquest and its exclamations over the New Order are limited to an introductory chapter by a functionary from the Institut für Deutsche Ostarbeit. Late in 1943 Baedekers headquarters in Leipzig were totally destroyed in a fire set off by a Royal Air Force bomb." (E.
