78/6260 [Leeuwarden]. Anonymous (19th cent.). (Monument to J.M. Baljee at the Nieuwe Stads Weeshuis (Leeuwarden orphanage)). Drawing, pen and ink and grey and brown wash, 14x10 cm., tipped onto mount.

= With contemp. manuscript description (1 leaf, recto and verso). Jacobus Martinus Baljee was born in Leeuwarden in 1752. At age 15 he was committed to the Leeuwarden orphanage. After finishing his education as a surgeon, he entered the service of the VOC and made his fortune in the Dutch East Indies. He died childless in 1823 and left everything to the Nieuwe Stads Weeshuis. In 1835, a cast iron memorial column was erected on the courtyard of the grateful orphanage. At one point in the 20th cent. the monument was demolished due to construction works.

- Formerly folded; sl. browned and w. a few spots/ sm. stains;

= The Utrecht archive holds a drawing attributed to Paulus van Liender, also depicting part of the Ganzenmarkt, and dated 1756 and a drawing attributed to Pieter van Lienden also depicting a part of the Oude Gracht and Ganzenmarkt with strangely enough almost the same folds (and of very similar size) (inv.nr. 30402). The archive also holds a drawing with the same composition as above, attributed to J. Versteegh (inv. nr. 35337). SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE CXI.

= The Netherlands Institute of Art History (RKD) identified the location from a Mesdag sketchbook with annotated drawings as the harbour of IJmuiden and from similar works dated June 1884. Cf. J.
