Monogrammist "B. de B." (early 20th cent.). (Retreat of two Russian soldiers during the Napoleonic wars). Drawing after F.H.E. PHILIPPOTEAUX, crayon and black chalk, heightened w. white gouache, 45,5x35 cm., monogrammed in lower right corner.
- Doubled; closed marginal tears; sl. soiled.
= Gobius (1815-1899) became an amateur artist and art collector later in life. Annotation on verso (by the artist?) in pencil: "Portret van: H.A.F.A. Gobius naar het leven door Cs.F. Curtenius Bentinck te Utrecht den 20 Mei 1833 ten huize zijner Moeder Mevrouw de Wed. Bentinck geb. Sanders boven Abrahamsen Oud Kerkhof te Utrecht". Bentinck was a student at the art academy in Utrecht and was probably a personal friend of Gobius.
