= Hollstein 317. Part of a rare series apparently representing the 4 Seasons, but which are cartoons on the hostilities between France and the Netherlands, probably during the Nine Year war. In 1688 the French troops crossed the Rhine and devastated much of the Electoral Palatinate (the 'wyn berg' in the rhyme). The Grand Alliance headed by William III of Orange was forged to counter the French expansion, which resulted in the Peace of Rijswijk in 1697. The French text can roughly be translated as: Far from possessing the sweet juice of the grape harvest, I find myself deprived of it by that of the orange. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE LXXXIX.
