- Cramped inner margins; cut short in top margin almost throughout, occas. affecting running title; two leaves trifle dam. in outer margin (from former sticking together).
= This ed. not in Adams, but cf. Adams F690.
- A good/ fine and complete set, with (apart from the waterstaining in vol II/ 1) the following mainly minor imperfections: vol. II/ 1 first half waterstained and occas. sl. mouldy; old owner's stamp on all title-pages; most vols. (occas./ partly) waterstained in blank margin(s) or blank lower and/ or top inner corner; one plate misbound; 1 plate sl. waterstained; 2 leaves loose. Most spine-ends chipped/ (sl.) dam.; occas. acid bite from mottling on covers and covers occas. chafed.
= Important and impressive work by Bernard de Montfaucon (1655-1741), one of the major scholars of the Congration of St. Maur (a congregation of French Benedictines, which is known for its high level of scholarship). Montfaucon is regarded as the founder of Byzantine palaeography and because of his works on ancient cultures (incl. the present work) as one of the founders of the discipline of archaeology. PMM 175, note: "His Antiquité expliquée (...) surveyed in fifteen volumes [incl. 5 supplements] the social and artistic aspects of the ancient civilizations; and (...) can well be called foundation stones of scientific archaeology." The works contains five sections: I. Les Dieux des Grecs et des Romains; II. La Culte des Grecs & des Romains (...); III. Les Usages de la vie.
