"The Winter". Together 39 lvs.

= (1)(a). "It is wise to make a very precise scheme of the story The Winter (...)" (scheme, 1 leaf; w. on the same leaf (recto and verso) drafts of letters to "Ministerie van Onderwijs, Kunsten en Wetenschappen, De Chef van de Afdeling Buitenlandse Betrekkingen" and "(...) Kampman's Bevrachtings- en Contrôlebedrijf". Two sm. holes w. loss of a few letters, mouldy in lower left blank margin); (b). "Shortened, concise version of THE WINTER" (synopsis, 1 leaf. Mouldy and dam. in lower left blank corner.

(2). "The Winter" [first version] (11 Roman numb. lvs., first leaf w. annot. "Begun in December 1952" and final leaf dated "January 20, 1953" at the end; 8 lvs. w. (mainly related) text on verso, i.a. the draft of a letter to Mr. A.F. Lodeizen concerning the possible passage to Britain by freight ship. WITH a curious general ms. title leaf in green ink, i.a. reading "The Acrobat. The new scandalous, immoral and perverted book by Gerard-Kornelis van het Reve. Buy and read it if you dare! (...)".

= Rare, early and very interesting manuscript of one of the works that Gerard Reve originally wrote in English, with numerous corrections and variants and huge differences compared to the published version. It was first published in 1955 by G.A. van Oorschot, and was translated into Dutch by Hanny Michaelis as Vier Wintervertellingen and thus published in 1963. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE XLIII.
