Johann Gottlieb Georgi was a German botanist, chemist and geographer, connected to the Imperial Russian Academy of Science in St. Petersburg. Between 1770 and 1774 he embarked on two journeys through the Russian Empire, the result of which (among other works) was his Beschreibung aller Nationen des Russischen Reichs, a monumental work with beautifully handcoloured plates divided in four parts, dealing with: I. Finnish tribes; II. Tatar people; III. Samoyeds, Manchurian and Eastern Siberian tribes; IV. Mongolians, Russians and other peoples.
